Save and share a variant model
Know what travels with the SKP and what a collaborator will see.

The SKP is the handoff
Variant configuration, registered targets and supported saved mappings live with the model. Save after configuring or editing them. Share the complete SKP when you want the recipient to retain that setup.
Copying a chair into a new model transfers geometry and its current materials; it does not transfer the source model’s Variant Sets. Save As produces an independent file, not a synchronized branch of your original.
With or without UMM
A collaborator without UMM opens a normal SketchUp model showing the saved, applied material state. The embedded configuration can remain in the file, but the UMM workflow is needed to manage and switch it.
Ordinary edits, deletion, material replacement and external cleanup can affect saved targets or materials. When the model returns, inspect and refresh the variant setup before presenting every look.
A simple handoff routine
Make the intended presentation state explicit.
- Apply the agreed look and review the result.
- Save the SKP with a clear project version name.
- Tell the recipient which look is applied and whether alternatives should be preserved.
- Ask them to avoid deleting alternative materials or purging through tools unaware of UMM variants.
- On return, review targets and repair missing materials before switching.
