Create a Set, name your first variant, then add Material Families.
Create your first variant to get started.
Explore different looks. Work with real materials.
Material Variants applies materials and texture positioning directly to your SketchUp model. These are real changes, not temporary previews.
Before experimenting, save a separate copy of your SketchUp model. Material Variants is not a backup system.
Getting started:
Families remember which parts of your model they control, even when materials change.
Use Setup to configure variants and Present to switch between looks.
A Material Family controls specific material assignments in your model.
Use Edit Targets to add or remove geometry from a family.
Show Targets highlights registered assignments:
New geometry isn't automatically added to existing families.
Removing targets only removes them from the family. Their materials remain unchanged.
Shared components follow SketchUp's normal behavior. Changes to shared faces can affect multiple instances.
Each variant stores the material choices for its families.
Leave unchanged keeps the current material and texture positioning.
Default removes the material assignment, allowing normal SketchUp material inheritance.
Different Sets can control the same geometry. The most recently applied Set determines the resulting assignments.
Conflicting material choices within one application are blocked to prevent unexpected results.
Material Variants can save different texture positioning for different variants.
In Main Settings, set Variant Texture Transform to Compact for an overlay with position, rotation and scale sliders, or Full for all Texture Transform tools. Both use the same native edit session, Apply and Cancel.
Edit Selected adjusts eligible faces selected in SketchUp.
Edit Family adjusts all eligible faces controlled by the family.
Preview Edit Area highlights the faces that can be edited, not their final texture appearance.
Some components share geometry. Changing texture positioning on one can also affect others.
UMM protects against changes outside the family by default.
Enable Allow texture edits outside this family when you intentionally want to include those shared faces.
Other objects' assigned materials remain unchanged.
Note: Front and back face sides are counted separately.
UMM provides three ways to inspect your model:
Show in Model
Highlights everywhere the current material is used.
Show Targets
Highlights the assignments registered to a Material Family.
Preview Edit Area
Highlights the faces eligible for texture editing.
These tools only highlight geometry. They do not change materials or texture positioning.
Hidden geometry remains hidden, and large previews may omit some occurrences.
Selected means you're configuring that variant. It doesn't necessarily mean it's applied.
Applied means UMM has verified that the model matches the variant.
Changed means a difference has been detected.
Needs Attention means something requires review, such as missing materials, targets, or conflicting changes.
An unverified variant may show no additional status.
Save your SketchUp model to preserve your Sets, Families, and Variants.
SketchUp's Undo can reverse supported operations, but a separate saved model is the reliable way to preserve your original project.
